The rules of theThird Baku International Architecture Award 

General Provisions.

The Baku International Architecture Award is an open, biennial award organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan with the support of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

We are proud to announce that the Second edition of the Awards in 2015 enjoyed participation from 34 countries and the award winners came from 12 countries: Bangladesh, Spain, Portugal, Japan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Vietnam, Singapore, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. 

Objective.                  

The main objective of the competition is to discover new ideas for: development and implementation of urban planning and architectural designs, more meaningful design for buildings and structures, search for composition, volumetric and spatial solutions; implementation of practical ideas to achieve the maximum diversity.

Award categories.

Entries are invited in the following categories:

  • A – «best implemented project in the architecture of public buildings»
  • B – «best implemented project in the architecture of residential buildings»
  • C – «best implemented interiors»
  • D – «best non-realised project»
  • E – «best implemented project in the field of landscape architecture»
  • F – «best implemented project in the field of rehabilitation and reconstruction of buildings»
  • G – «best publication in the field of architecture»
  • H – «best work in the field of  architecture journalism and criticism (online and print)

Eligibility

Architects duly qualified for architectural practice in their country of residence may participate in the Award.

Each participant can submit only one project for each category and participation is free of charge.

Submission materials

The submission materials for participation in the Award procedure are as follows:

  • A Registration Form filled in by Participant (in block letters, readable)  
  • plans, facades, photographs of the project, graphic materials will be presented on 80x100 cm format boards (vertical orientation), 2 maximum on a thin hard ground
  • short explanatory text - 2 A4 format pages maximum
  • applicants for awards in categories G and H must provide a summary in English if their work is not in the English language, approximately 300 words
  • all applicants are required to include a statement that to the effect that their submission has not been previously recognized at the Baku International Architecture Awards.

The working languages ​​of the competition

The competition is held in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. Written components must include English summary.

Anonymity

To guarantee anonymity, projects submitted to the award will be marked with a code in the upper right corner of the boards, on the descriptive report and on the sealed identification envelope (the code will start with the Category letter and include a six digit underlined number). The sealed identification envelope will include contact details for the author (or author group) (authors first name, name, patronymic, phone numbers, addresses, copy of ID card, copy of diploma in architecture, the distribution of the percentage of the premium for the level of participation in the project), as well as the electronic version of the project.Without the electronic version the work will not be accepted!

Awards

The prize fund of 52,500 AZN, established by the organizers, will be awarded in the various categories as follows:

  • A – «best implemented project in the architecture of public buildings»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • B – «best implemented project in the architecture of residential buildings»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • C – «best implemented interiors»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • D – «best non-realised project»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • E – «best implemented project in the field of landscape architecture»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • F – «best implemented project in the field of rehabilitation and reconstruction of buildings»

First prize of  4000 AZN, Second prize of 2500 AZN, Third prize of 1000 AZN.

  • G – «best publication in the field of architecture»

First prize of  2000 AZN, Second prize of 1250 AZN, Third prize of 500 AZN.

  • H – «best work in the field of  architecture journalism and criticism (online and print)» (online and print).

First prize of  2000 AZN, Second prize of 1250 AZN, Third prize of 500 AZN.

International jury:

Award entries will be evaluated by an international jury:

Vassilis Sgoutas (chair) - former UIA President, Greece

Michel Barmaki - former UIA Secretary General, Lebanon

Hayder Ali- UIA Region V Vice-President, Sudan

Frédéric Ragot - UIA Region I Council Member, France

Elbay Gasimzada, Chairman of the board Union of Architects of Azerbaijan

Members of the international jury may not participate in the award and may not have any contact with the participants. Only the organisers of the Award may answer participants’ questions.

The jury members can validly conduct its work in the presence of at least 2/3 of its members. The jury will review all entries and eliminate those that do not meet the requirements listed above.

The decisions of the jury are taken by simple majority, in a manner determined by the jury itself. In the event of a tied vote the chairman of the international jury will have the casting vote.

The International Jury shall be the only arbiter in all stages of the adjudication up to the awarding of the prizes.

The organizers of the competition, may invite experts, and the consultants will comply with the confidentiality of the jury, and without the right to vote.

Timetable.

Announcement: 25 February 2017

Deadline for submitting questions:  1 August 2017.

Deadline for organiser’s replies to questions: 15 August  2017.

Deadline for dispatching entries by post: 1 September 2017.

Deadline for the reception of entries: 15 September 2017

International jury: 6 October 2017.

Announcement of the results: 7 October 2017.

Submission procedure

Projects by national participants will be presented by 15 September 2017 by no later than 18:00,  Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku, Union of Architects of Azerbaijan at 24 Murtuza Muxtarov street.

Foreign participants’ submissions will be dispatched on 1 September 2017 at the latest (postmark will be proof) and must reach the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan by 15 September 2017.

Public awareness.

The Award procedure and regulations will be published on the official website of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan www.uaa.azThe UIA will also publish the Award announcement through its international communication network.

Organisation of exhibition and issue of the participants’ catalogue (bulletin)

An exhibition of all the works presented will be organized and will be open to the public during the Award and work of the jury.

All the awarded and recommended projects will be published in a catalogue (bulletin).
