Award ceremony of the First Baku International Architecture Award held

On 3 November 2013 the Award ceremony of the First Baku International Architectural Award dedicated to the 90th anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev, organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan with support of the International Union of Architects, was held in "Segah" Hall of "Four Seasons Hotel Baku".

Guests from our country and overseas, officials from the Unions of Architects representing Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Serbia, public and political figures gathered for the ceremony.

Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr Abulfaz Qarayev in his welcome speech noted that the present-day Azerbaijan architecture combines aspects of historical traditions and introduces modern tinges to the historical look of the country. As a result of construction carried out in last years a modern image of Baku is being formed and beautiful sites are provided for both local citizens and guests of our country. Such models of modern art as the Heydar Aliyev Centre, "Flame Towers" Complex as well as the International Mugham Centre and State Arts and Crafts Museum have emerged as modern symbols of Baku and took a rightful place among the most immense buildings in the world. It is not by a chance that the White City of Baku Project is considered to be one of the best urban planning projects in the world. The Minister stressed the importance of the First Baku International Architectural Award for which more than 300 projects from 30 countries had been submitted. The fact that the Jury of the competition was comprised of the world-renowned experts, and the number and quality of submissions is another confirmation of the importance of the event.

Mr Michel Barmaki, Secretary General of the International Union of Architects, Mr Elbay Qasim-zadeh, Chairman of the Board of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, gave a speech; a film highlighting the competition was demonstrated.

The results of the session of the Jury of the First Baku International Architectural Award held in Baku from 01-02 November 2013, chaired by Mr Michel Barmaki, Secretary General of the International Union of Architects, and comprising Mr Elbay Qasim-zadeh, Chairman of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, Mr Vassilis Sgoutis, past-President of the International Union of Architects, and Mr Haider Ali vice-President of the International Union of Architects, announced results of the competition. According to the results, the winners of the award are as follows:

Category A - Best implemented project in the architecture of public buildings:

First Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 4000 AZN -Rodrigues Rebelo Camilo, Tiago Pimentel Pedro (Portugal, Porto): Museum of art and archeology of coa valley

Second Place Diploma and 2500 AZN - Valentini Sergio JAHN (USA): Mansueto Library

Third Place Diploma and 1000 AZN – Thierry Chambon, Maxime Repaux, Frederic Roustan (France) : Architects Assocites BAM "Cultural and Sosial Center of Valencia, France"

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Abbas Alasgarov, Chairman of the State Urban Planning and Architecture Committee and Mr Vassilis Sgoutas, past- President of the International Union of Architects.

Category B - Best implemented project in the architecture of residential buildings:

First Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 4000 AZN - Arnaud Lacoste & Jerome Vincon, Lode architecture, (France): D HOUSE

Second Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 2500 AZN – Kenji Ido (Yaponiya): House in Tamatsu

Third Place Diploma and 1000 AZN – Imamaliyev Nariman (Republic of Azerbaijan): Villa "Oskar" in the Shuvalan settlement

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Michel Barmaki, Secretary General of the International Union of Architects, and Mr Elbay Qasimzadeh, Chairman of the Board of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan

C - Best implemented interiors:

First Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 4000 AZN -Kim Kiduck (USA, Culver City): Bye By Burnside

Second Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 2500 AZN – Yaroslav Usov (Russian Federation): Cottage in the "Antonovka" settlement

Third Place Diploma and 1000 AZN - Rahim Sayfullayev (Baku): Interior of the Young Spectators' Theatre in Baku

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Thomas Vonier, Secretary General of the International Union of Architects, and Mr Ilqar Baylarov, Secretary of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan

Category D - Best non-realised project:

The International Jury has decided to cancel the First and Third Prizes and to award three Second Prizes in this category - best non-realised project:

Second Place Diploma and 2500 AZN - Zaur Qafarov (Republic of Azerbaijan):Project Proposal for Multimedia Centre

Second Place Diploma and 2500 AZN -Patrick Collier (Morocco): Bioclimatic Houses

Second Place Diploma and 2500 AZN -Nikolay Lim (Russian Federation): Centre of maritime culture and popular music, Gaosun, Taiwan

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Haider Ali, vice- President of the International Union of Architects and Mr Elchin Aliyev, responsible secretary of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan.

E - Best implemented project in the field of landscape architecture:

First Prize First Prize, symbolic award statue and 4000 AZN - Znidarsic Aves (Slovenia): Rowinq Center bled-spectator stand

Second Prize and 2500 AZN - Rako Goran (Croatia, Zagreb): Vicedol Archaeological Museum

Third Prize and 1000 AZN - Silva Raulino Rikardo (Portugal): Project "Equipment for events"

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Aleksandr Korbut, vice-President of the Union of Architects of Belarus and Mr Farhad Mollazadeh , Secretary of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan.

F - Best project undertaken in the field of rehabilitation and reconstruction:

First Place Diploma, symbolic award statue and 4000 AZN – Kurdiani Zaxariy (Georgia, Tbilisi): Project of reconstruction of the higher station of the funicular and "Mtasminda" restaurant in Tbilisi

Second Place Diploma and 2500 AZN - Babakishiyev Rasim (Republic of Azerbaijan): Restoration of a residential building and "Shah Palace" Hotel regeneration in Icheri Sheher

Third Place Diploma and 1000 AZN - Landolina Nazzarena (Italya):Villa at Garda lake

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Bahrom Yusupov, President of the Union of Architects of Tajikistan and Mrs Gulchohra Mammadova, Rector of the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction.

Category G - Best publication in the field of architecture:

The Jury has decided to cancel all prizes in this category and the following five publications have been selected for award:

The prizes to the winners were presented by Mr David Abuladze, President of Union of Architects of Georgia, and Mrs Maisa Rahimova, Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Etnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science.

On behalf of the Board of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, the symbolic statue of the First Baku International Architectural Award was given to the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr Abulfas Garayev for meritable contribution to the development of Azerbaijan architecture.

Also, Mr Michel Barmaki, Secretary General of the International Union of Architects, members of the International Jury: vice-Presidents of the International Union of Architect Mr Thomas Vonier and Mr Haider Ali were declared Honorary Members of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan Republic and were awarded with relevant diploma.

An award pin dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Union of Architects of the Russian Federation and "Ustad Medal" of the Union of Architects of Tajikistan were awarded to the Chairman of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan Mr Elbay Qasimzadeh. The prizes were presented respectively by Mr Andrey Vladimirovich Bokov, President of the Union of Architects of the Russian Federation, and Mr Bahrom Yusupov, President of the Union of Architects of Tajikistan.

The award ceremony was followed by the gala performance with participation of the Young's Chamber Orchestra of the Baku Music Academy named after U. Hajibayli, honoured artist Tunzala Aliyeva, Presidential grant-holder, khananda (singer of mugham) Babek Niftaliyev and mugham trio, "Qaya" group, the 4th of the Eurovision-12 Song Contest Sabina Babayeva, laureate of Montreux festival in nomination "Best Pianist" Emil Afrasiyab and his group (USA); a two-time Grammy Award-winner, world-renowned jazz musician Bob James, as a special guest, who presented brilliant compositions.

Mrs Leyla Quliyeva, a presenter of Eurovision -12 Song Contest, was the hostess of the ceremony.

At the end of the ceremony a group photo was taken.
